Wessex MTX-120–E Dung Beetle Paddock Cleaner – Overview
A powerful self-powered sweeper designed to efficiently collect paddock waste while improving pasture health
The Wessex MTX-120-E Dung Beetle Paddock Cleaner is a self-powered, high-efficiency sweeper specifically designed to maintain clean and healthy paddocks for horse owners, equestrian centres, alpaca farms, and other livestock environments. Rather than using a vacuum-style system, this paddock cleaner uses a robust 5.5 hp petrol engine to power a four-bank bristle rotor that effectively sweeps manure, dead grass, twigs, and other debris into its hopper.
One of the key benefits of the Dung Beetle is its grassing-friendly design. The stiff polypropylene bristles mounted on hardwood strips don’t just collect muck — they lightly groom the turf as they sweep. This grooming action encourages fresh, healthy grass growth over time, a major advantage compared to vacuum cleaners that simply suck up surface material.
Ease of use and operator control are central to the MTX-120-E. A throttle lever clips to the ATV or UTV rack for convenient speed control, and a centrifugal clutch enables the operator to engage or disengage the rotor directly from the driver’s seat. Moreover, there are adjustable spring tines in front of the brush to loosen stubborn horse droppings and improve material collection.
Handling and manoeuvrability are enhanced through thoughtful engineering. The cleaner runs on its own four wheels, meaning no load is placed on the tow vehicle’s hitch. The front wheels are aligned with the rotor to closely follow ground contours, while the rear wheels castor freely — giving smooth tracking even on uneven paddock terrain. The drawbar is “floating,” which further reduces strain on the tow point and helps the unit glide over rough surfaces.
When the hopper is full, emptying is straightforward: a hand-operated winch allows the user to tip the hopper and neatly dump the contents. The hopper is finely balanced at its pivot, and a spring-loaded pin locks it safely into place while operating.
Safety is also well considered. The Dung Beetle features a swivelling ball hitch, which helps mitigate risk by permitting movement under load and reducing stress in the event of a tip-over — meeting relevant health and safety regulations.
Built for durability, the MTX-120-E has a rigid steel frame, tough bristles, and a balanced hopper design. Regular use not only clears waste but also improves pasture quality. With a working width of 1.2 m, a hopper capacity of around 0.7 m³, and a weight of roughly 317 kg, this paddock cleaner is a practical, efficient, and cost-effective choice for keeping animal paddocks clean and promoting turf health.
